Some 300 runners from as far as Switzerland and France, and many US States, gathered at Millpond County Park on May 18 in the pre dawn light, shivering and nervously chatting, waiting for it to be light enough for the race to begin at the appointed time, a time chose because it was just light enough to allow running without headlamps. The runners needed an early start because most would be out all day, and many would be running until long after sunset.

These runners had gathered for the questionable purpose of running the Bishop High Sierra Ultras, a set of running races within a race that were started by Bishop resident Marie Boyd in 1994.
