Early Monday morning snow transformed the gazebo and nearby pond at the Bishop City Park into a winter wonderland. The snow lingered through mid morning before melting from city streets. The forecast calls for a slight chance of more snow Wednesday night.
Caltrans District 9, Bishop, reported Sunday morning that U.S. Highway 395 was open throughout Mono County due to continuous snow-plowing efforts.
Early Monday morning snow transformed the gazebo and nearby pond at the Bishop City Park into a winter wonderland. The snow lingered through mid morning before melting from city streets. The forecast calls for a slight chance of more snow Wednesday night.
The mix of rain and snow over the weekend and into Monday throughout the Owens Valley has turned this month into the second-wettest January on record for the Bishop area, according to the National Weather Service.
Andy Gorlow, meteorologist with the NWS Las Vegas office, said Monday morning that the month of January so far for this year has seen about 5.30 inches in precipitation, which didn’t actually include Monday’s early-morning snow that changed to rain later on.
“That would put it close to about five and a half inches,” Gorlow said of Monday’s precipitation.
He said the wettest January on record for the Bishop area occurred in 1969 when 8.93 inches of precipitation was measured.
Gorlow said as wet as the month has been so far, it most likely won’t be coming close to be breaking the 1969 record.
