Mammoth snow

Mammoth Lakes residents continue to shovel out from the snow and more is predicted in the forecast this week.

The December snowfall amount for the Sierra Nevada currently stands at 213%, with more snow in the forecast for this week.

Heather Richards, meteorologist at the Reno, Nevada, National Weather Service office, said Monday that besides the storms expected to move through the area throughout the week, there is a potential for additional storms to bring more precipitation to the area.

Richards explained that the current weather is a combination of an atmospheric river feeding moisture into central and southern California and a series of low pressure systems out of Alaska joining to create heavy moisture and lots of precipitation.

Winter conditions will continue into New Year’s weekend with well below normal temperatures.

On Wednesday, a split flow pattern develops with energy associated with the northern jet stream moving out of the Northern Rockies into the Northern Plains.

Locally, energy that splits from the main flow is forecast to develop into a closed circulation off the central California Coast Wednesday night.

Depending on the location of the developing low and where it eventually tracks will determine how much of an impact it will have for the local area.
