Fallen tree branch traps woman inside car

Staff Writer

A woman was trapped inside a vehicle late Thursday afternoon when a tree branch fell on the car in which she was a passenger while it was parked on the southbound shoulder of U.S. 395 south of Bishop.

Personnel from the Bishop Fire Department used a chain saw to cut away parts of the branch that had fallen on the car to clear a space for the front passenger door to be opened to remove the woman.

Charlotte Matthew, 69, of Trout Creek, Montana, was uninjured in the accident. The driver, James Matthew, 63, also of Trout Creek, Montana, also escaped injury.

According to a press release from the Bishop office of the CHP, "...a strong gust of wind caused a large branch from a nearby tree to break free and fall on the parked vehicle."
