Robert Edward Blair
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today, Saturday, at the Lone Pine Seventh Day Adventist Church, 105 N. Mt. Whitney Dr. for Robert Edward Blair.
Born March 20, 1916 in Long Beach, Bob died at home in Lone Pine on Nov. 23, 2010. He was 94.
Robert Blair was the first child of Susie Murphy Blair and Robert E. Blair. He was the sixth in an unbroken line of family men to carry that name, and was the first of eight children born to Robert and Susie. His siblings remember him as a kind and responsible older brother.
One of his first memories was of traveling, and this remained one of his joys throughout his life. Bob’s early years were spent in the Long Beach area and in the Mohave Desert. He remembered accompanying his paternal grandfather to the Long Beach Pier where there was an informal debating society. At other times, he would spend time with his maternal grandfather, Frank Murphy, in the Lanfair Valley of the Mohave Desert.
The love of his life was Lois Irene Thompson, born on Sept. 9, 1919 in Cheyenne, Wyo., and they were married in 1937.
Bob was a member of the CCC for three years prior to being drafted into the U.S. Army in 1944. He was stationed in Japan and developed an appreciation for that culture which remained throughout his life.
Bob was the father of two young children at that time, Robert E., VII, born in 1940, and Barbara Jean, born in 1943. After his return home, their family was completed with the birth of Richard Duane in 1947 and Aileen A. in 1950.
Bob was a devoted husband and father, and enjoyed taking his family camping at every opportunity. When possible he invited nieces and nephews to join the fun. He developed a strong interest in astronomy and was always happy to share his love of the heavens. Bob often gave informal talks to students and family about the wonders of the night sky. Using the telescope, he was able to help them identify different planets and stars.
Bob had an abiding love for his Savior, Jesus Christ, and was a strong supporter of the local Seventh Day Adventist congregation in Lone Pine.
Bob was a beloved grandfather and favorite uncle to his many grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He and Lois were always hospitable hosts to anyone passing through Lone Pine. His kindness and gentle sense of humor will be long remembered.
Lois preceded him in death in 2008, and Bob never stopped missing his beloved companion. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Lila Thompson; and brother, Jerry Blair.
Bob is survived by two sons, Robert of Japan and Richard of Oklahoma; two daughters, Barbara Stone of India and Aileen Stockton of Lone Pine; 19 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Howard Blair of the 7IL Ranch and Milton Blair of the Lazy Daisy Ranch, both at Essex; three sisters, Leona Barrett of Castle Valley, Utah, Suzanne Huddleston of Los Angeles and Bonnie Roos of Kenya.
