The Big Pine Warriors topped their season with a win over the Tigers and the Hi-Lo League championship Saturday afternoon at Lee Vining.
With the score 10-23 in favor of the Tigers at the half, this was not your typical Big Pine get-out-in-front-early rout. The Warriors waited until the second half to rack up the points, for a final score of 49-37.
“What else could we ask for,” said coach Mark Tillemans, “to win the title on the last game of the season.”
After Big Pine’s two-point loss to Lone Pine, Oct. 29, Tillemans said the team made some adjustments. “We left that game behind us. We were a different team Saturday. We handled a lot of adversity during the week.”
With a 13-point deficit, the Warriors fumbled in the red zone of their first possession of the second half. Not a good omen.
The game turned around when Jesse Chirrick intercepted a pass and took off for a 26-yard TD. “That really sparked the team,” said Tillemans.
The Warriors recovered their onside kick, setting up a repeat performance by Chirrick. Quarterback Isaiah Bacoch tossed a flea flicker to Chirrick for a 50-yard TD.
One more third-quarter TD put Big Pine ahead 29-23.
The Warriors’ running game helped run time off the clock through the fourth.
The Big Pine Warriors will face Calvary Baptist La Verne in the playoffs at home on Saturday, 1 p.m.
