The Bishop Bronco JV overcame a sluggish start to beat Mammoth 35-7. The Broncos and Huskies were tied 7-7 at the half but Bishop dominated the second half.
Bishop got on the board first with freshman Cam White blocking a Huskies punt, returning the ball to the 3-yard line. White then finished the short drive with a 3-yard touchdown run.
The Huskies evened the score late in the second quarter.
The Broncos scored on their first two possessions of the second half to grab a 21-7 lead. Quarterback Kyle Batchelder connected with Curran Simpson on a 24-yard pass to open the quarter. Batchelder then capped the second drive of the half with a 5-yard scoring run.
Leading 21-7, the Broncos added two more scoring runs, 3 yards from Dustin Waasdorpf and 22 yards from Corey Thomson. The Bronco defense was excellent in the second half forcing six turnovers.
Ryan Devore intercepted two passes and forced a fumble. Kyle Miller intercepted a Huskie pass with Carl Olsen, Cam White and Corey Thomson all recovering Huskie fumbles. Roman Amisone and Evan Richman led the way on defense with 7 tackles. Linebackers Drake Trimble and Waasdorpf also had fine games with 7 and 5 tackles each.
“The kids really played with confidence in the second half,” coach Arnie Palu said. “Our best football is still ahead of us and we hope to take a step forward next week at Bishop’s LaJolla.”
