Ronnie Thomas Roberts
Born June 13, 1934 in Tacoma, Wash., Ronnie Roberts often commented that he “didn’t stay in Tacoma long enough to get rained on.”
Ronnie grew up in the Southern California communities of Alhambra and Long Beach. He attended Long Beach Poly High School where he played football and was part of the Comus Club. He continued playing football for Whittier College, which he attended from 1953-57, earning his B.A. in Psychology, Political Science and Religion. At Whittier, he was part of the Lancer Society.
Following Whittier, Ronnie attended the Claremont School of Theology, earning a Master’s in Theology in 1960 as part of the first graduating class from the Claremont location, after the school moved from the USC campus. Ordained in the United Methodist Church in 1960, Ronnie served appointments in Flagstaff and Safford, Ariz., and in Van Nuys, Thousand Oaks, Lakewood, Bishop, Glendora, Garden Grove and Artesia-Cerritos.
Ronnie served the Bishop United Methodist Church from 1979-87. During this time, he was a member of the Ministerial Association, Rotary, coached AYSO soccer, was chaplain for the Bishop Bagpipers Marching Band and announced the JV football games at Bishop High School.
After retirement, Ronnie and his wife, Alma, have made their home in the community of La Verne. He is survived by his wife, Alma; son, Chris Roberts, and wife Karen and their two daughters, Emery and Peyton; daughter, Jennifer Simpson, husband Barry and their children, Hannah, Curran and Alec; Alec’s wife, Merriah, and a first great-granddaughter, Audrey Ann, born on Christmas Day.
A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 29 at the La Verne United Methodist Church, 3205 D St., La Verne.
