Miss California USA’s Miss Congeniality is headed to New York to appear on the “Katie Couric Show” this week.
Kristina Blum, 22, of Bishop, said she will be boarding a flight in Los Angles Tuesday to make her first trip to the Big Apple to appear on the talk show, which is broadcast nationwide on the ABC Network.
Blum said Thursday she has been invited to appear on the show to discuss her experience in the Miss California USA Pageant held Jan. 2-4 in Long Beach.
Blum will arrive in New York early Wednesday morning and is scheduled to film an interview with Couric Thursday. That episode of the show is scheduled to air Friday.
“I’m sure the interview will have a lot to do with the pageant stuff, but I’m really hoping to have a chance to talk about the Eastern Sierra, because I’m first and foremost from Bishop and the Eastern Sierra.”
Throughout her reign as Miss City of Bishop and her bid for the title of Miss California USA, Blum has shared a love and deep connection for her hometown communities in the Eastern Sierra and has been eager to share that love at every turn.
“I am so grateful for everything the community has done for me. I am who I am because of the community I grew up in,” Blum said. “I am who I am because everybody has invested so much in me since I was a child. I am so grateful, and so proud.”
If the opportunity presents itself, Blum said she would like to invite Couric to attend Bishop’s Mule Days celebration to get a glimpse of the unique community that helped shape her into the woman she is today.
Blum spoke with producers of the show Friday to cover some of the talking points that will be brought up in the interview. She said her message about the pageant experience remains the same.
“True beauty is in our uniqueness as individuals, and I’m looking forward to spreading that message,” Blum said.
Blum said she would be honored if residents in the Eastern Sierra would like to tune into the show and watch the interview.
Since winning the Miss Congeniality title in the Miss California USA Pageant, Blum has continued her work as a greeter at the Bishop Area Chamber of Commerce, which allows her to pursue one of her passions: promoting and introducing people to the Eastern Sierra.
Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tawni Thomson said Blum is a perfect spokesperson for the area, “and how lucky are we to have Miss Congeniality at our visitor center?”
As this will be her first trip to New York, Blum said she is also hoping to take in some of the sights. “I really, really want to go to Broadway. Since getting involved in the plays at Playhouse 395, I’ve wanted to go to Broadway.”
Blum also said she would like to see the Statue of Liberty on her trip.
