Carl L. Boyer
Carl L. Boyer died peacefully at his home in Lone Pine on Tuesday Dec. 17, 2013, surrounded by his family. He was 91.
Carl was born on March 31, 1922, in Twin Falls, Idaho. As an infant he moved with his family to Mammoth Lakes in 1923. Because of this early move, Carl considered himself an Eastern Sierra native. Carl and family moved one final time to Lone Pine in 1924 where he attended elementary and high school, graduating in 1942. After high school, Carl worked as a welder at Marinship Corporation ship yard in Sausalito until entering military service in 1943. He served with the United States Army Air Corps in the Pacific theater until his discharge in 1946.
Following the war, Carl was employed for a brief time with the U.S. Forest Service, before going to work in the construction industry with Inyo Builders, Inc. as a painter. In 1964 Carl obtained his contractor’s license and became sole owner and operator of Carl L. Boyer Painting. He retired in 2005 at the age of 83.
Carl volunteered with Lone Pine Fire Department. He held every position within the department from firefighter to deputy chief. After retiring from active firefighting service, Carl continued with the district as a Fire Commissioner. Altogether, Carl served the fire protection district and the citizens of his community for 48 years, mentoring many young firefighters.
Carl is survived by his wife of 66 years, Patricia of Lone Pine; son, Jon and wife Greta Boyer of Mammoth Lakes; daughters, Cindy and husband Don Nichols of Lone Pine and Carla and husband Steve Whisler of Lone Pine; seven grandchildren; and 18 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Mabel; brothers, Don, Archie and Jack; sister, Hazel; and grandson, Matthew Carl McCormick.
Funeral services were held at the Lone Pine Church of the Nazarene on Monday, Dec. 30, with burial following immediately at Mt. Whitney Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests any donations be made in the name of Carl Boyer to the Lone Pine Volunteer Fire Department.
