The Lone Pine Golden Eagles basketball teams got their first test against the Kern Valley Broncs last Tuesday, Nov. 26.
The Eagles pulled out a 60-56 win; the Lady Eagles fell, 58-21.
“We were a little cold in the first half,” said Eagles coach Scott Kemp. Kern led by 4 at the half, but the Eagles came back behind impressive offensive rebounds and put-backs by Brad Greene.
Kemp acknowledged that the Broncs have “a couple of good shooters who made some amazing baskets.” But, when a team only has one shot at the basket, it’s tough to win the game.
Three of Lone Pine’s Eagles were in the double digits in points: Greene with 21, Garrett Sullivan, 18 with four 3-pointers, and Alec Garcia with 11.
“We moved the ball well,” said Kemp. “It was a great game.”
The Eagles take on the Bishop Broncos this evening at 7:30 in Bishop. Last year, the Eagles pulled out a 74-64 win over cross-county rival Bishop in Lone Pine but lost to the Broncos during the Christmas Classic.
The Lady Eagles were up against a couple of power-house Lady Bronc shooters in Marissa Witten and Rebecca Gallis.
The Eagles were down 41-5 at the half, but nearly matched the Broncs point for point in the second.
Coach Sonny Lindsey has done some “reorganizing” in preparation for the team’s match with the Bishop Lady Broncos this evening, start time 5:30 in Bishop.
