Although the Bishop Lady Broncos and Kern Valley Lady Broncs are equal in name, the Broncos’ volleyball squad proved to be the superior team as they scored a sweeping victory on home court Thursday afternoon.
In a series of rapid plays, the Broncos pulled far ahead of Kern Valley in the first set. The team clearly works as a dynamic unit and was able to play off one another’s strengths with great efficiency. Notably, Dana Wilcher’s delivery of powerful, kills and Lora Terrasas’ ability to keep the ball in plan contributed greatly to the Bishop’s triumph in the first set. Bishop won with a 12-point advantage at 25-13.
The second set was a much closer game, though Bishop still carried a significant lead for the majority of play. Undeterred by Kern Valley’s improved game, Staci Sonke launched an impressive points run at the line and Callie Kruse and Brooke Callahan dominated the net with kill after kill. Although the point spread was narrower, the Broncos came away with a victory and a final score of 25 to 22.
With two sets won, the Broncos heightened their focus to get the 3-0 sweep. The final game followed a similar pattern as the first two sets, with the Broncos widening the gap in points early on, securing the lead and guaranteeing yet another win.
Kern Valley did manage to gain back a bit of its lost momentum, however, not enough to seriously dent Bishop’s advantage.
The final set ended with a score of 25-17 and the sweep for the Bishop Broncos.
As a team, the Broncos play exceedingly well, with a combination of individual precision and team skill.
The Broncos head to Rosamond Tuesday for a match-up with the Roadrunners, currently 1-2 in league.
