The Lone Pine Lady Golden Eagles volleyball team kept Friday night exciting on home court. Faced with the CIF number nine Vasquez Mustangs, the Eagles swept in three close games.
“We put together a solid team effort,” said coach Mel Joseph. “We found our rhythm early and took advantage of Vasquez miscues.”
Lone Pine used an aggressive attacking game that kept the Mustangs scrambling. “We made our share of mistakes,” said Joseph, “but the girls never gave in to them.”
Vasquez took an early lead of 2-6 in game one, but Lone Pine rallied behind a deadly kill from Maureen Cariou to keep the score close. Katelyn Button stepped up with a kill for a Mustang side out and Amanda Barlese went on a run at the line to tie the score 12-12.
Lone Pine took the lead for the first time and out-played Vasquez 10-2 with sharp play at the net. With Katie Lacey at the line, Lone Pine went on a roll, chalking up 5 points for a 23-14 advantage.
Vasquez woke back up with a point run to narrow the score 24-20, but the Eagles nailed the final point for a 25-20 win.
The Eagles started hot in game two, but the Mustangs caught up to tie the game at 7-7. Neither team could put together a run from the line, playing nearly point for point until Lone Pine gained a 2-point advantage at 16-14 and held on through a strong Vasquez push at the end. Abby Southey’s kill gave Lone Pine a 24-21 lead and the side out. The Eagles put it away at 25-21.
Game three was more of the same: a strong Lone Pine effort against a determined Vasquez squad. The Eagles scored the sweep with a 25-20 win.
