Kathleen Kelley Roberts
Kathy was born Aug. 5, 1955 in San Diego to Kenneth and Dolores Kelley. She passed away April 27, 2013 at Renown Medical Center in Reno after a heroic battle with a life debilitating illness that lasted several years. Most people never knew the seriousness of the health issues she was facing because Kathy was the type of person who hid her pain with a smile and looked to others first.
Kathy loved all living things, especially flowers and plants. She had a true green thumb and a passion for making beautiful creations. She spent many years working at Bishop Nursery and opened her own shop called, “Not Only Flowers” within Sierra Gardens Nursery in Bishop. She designed beautiful floral and plant arrangements for all types of occasions. She was musically gifted as well, and in her youth, she played guitar and sang with a touring production of “Up with the People.”
Kathleen was a 1973 graduate of Bishop Union High School. She worked for the Inyo National Forest in Bishop as the assistant public affairs officer. She was, and always will be, loved by her fellow Forest Service workers. She was great with people and enjoyed educating visitors about the opportunities and the beauty of the Eastern Sierra.
Kate was a remarkable woman who embraced a unique combination of feminine beauty, athletic grace, intellectual curiosity and a keen sense of humor. She was talented and confident, but humble and unpretentious. She always through of others first. She worked in the office of the Eastern Sierra Breast Cancer Alliance from her wheelchair, as a volunteer. Unconditional love flowed from her heart to her husband, her daughter, her parents and siblings and to her friends; all of whom are better people for having known that love. Mostly, she will forever be remembered by all who knew her, as a role model of courage and dignity in the face of adversity. She will be greatly missed.
Kate is survived by her husband, Griff Roberts of Bishop; daughter, Lisa Liles of San Diego; father, Ken Kelley of Bishop; brother, Timothy Kelley of Bishop and his wife, Terri and children, Melissa and Shannon; brother, Paul Kelley of Vietnam; brother, James Kelley of Chicago, Ill.; and her sister, Sarah Kelley Francis of McKinney, Texas, her husband, Doug, and children, Sierra and Savannah.
Donations in her name may be made to the Eastern Sierra Breast Cancer Alliance.
A memorial service is pending.
