The Bishop Broncos’ soccer squads solidified their spots in CIF playoffs with dual wins over the Kern Valley Broncs on the road Tuesday.
The final High Desert League game will be on Broncos’ turf, against the Rosamond Roadrunners this afternoon.
With the 2-0 win over Kern Valley and an 8-1 league record, the boys team will be playing for the HDL championship against the 7-1-1 Roadrunners.
Pedro Ibarra and Angel Aranzubia scored Bishop’s goals with assists from Angel Flores and Ibarra.
The Lady Broncos 6-2 win bumps their record to 7-2, a sure second place in league and a spot in CIF playoffs.
Coach Cathy McKinley made some changes and put the more offensive formation into play against Kern.
“It worked very well,” she said. “We still have some work to do before play-offs but overall it was very successful. We totally dominated the field in the first half (against Kern); the ball rarely went into our half of the field. The girls played with renewed energy and determination.”
Maritza Garcia scored 2 goals with 1 for Yessenia Mora, Alicia Campos, Nicole Riley and Kristy Dohnel, who also was credited with an assist. Brenda Gonzalez and Shelby McKinley finished the game with 2 and 1 assist, respectively.
Cathy McKinley acknowledged the team’s “strong and reliable back line” including Jackie Garcia, Cassie McKinley, Lora Terrasas and Claire Jellison. The line, and goal keeper Gabi Morales, have allowed only six goals this season.
The girls game starts at 3 p.m., the boys at 5 p.m.
