The past few days have been painfully quiet in terms of Owens Valley high school sports.
The Bishop Broncos’ match-up with the Mojave Mustangs, scheduled for this past Friday, was cancelled when high winds closed U.S. 395 to high-profile vehicles, which included the Mustangs’ bus.
The balance of area athletes were on the road honing their skills in tournament play.
Bishop’s basketball squads are on the road to Mineral County today. The end of this week, both varsity teams will be participating in tournament action.
The first home stand for the Broncos varsity will be at the Christmas Classic, starting Dec. 27.

Lone Pine Golden Eagles
Chirrick is not the only coach struggling with that pesky scoring issue. According to Lady Golden Eagles coach Sonny Lindsey, “we’re moving the ball, we’re getting penetration, we’re just tentative when it comes to shooting.”
More details on the Lady Eagles’ matches at the Serpent Classic held in Hawthorne, Nev., last Friday and Saturday, will be available for Thursday’s sports page. Lindsey’s brief recap: “We won our last game; got blown out in one and were competitive in the other two. We look a little better with each game. We just have to learn to win.”
The Eagles lost two matches by a nose: Lone Pine 48, Virginia City 51; and Lone Pine 48, Pershing County 52.
Lone Pine travels to Ridgecrest for a rematch with Immanuel Christian today. Desert Mountain League play starts Friday, Dec. 7 against Silver Valley on the road. Next Tuesday, Dec. 11, the Eagles host the Bishop Broncos in the cross-county pairing with the junior varsity games starting at 3 p.m., the girls varsity at 6 p.m. followed by the boys at 7:30 p.m.
