High Country Lumber picked up its game Monday evening smashing 10 hits in the final two innings in a match-up with Native Mixed.
HC pulled off a 12-6 win, improving its standings in the city’s Adult Softball League, A/B Coed Division. The divison’s championship tournament starts up Tuesday, Aug. 7.
Native Mixed established the lead going into the second inning, but not enough of a margin to overcome HC’s late inning rally. The deciding factor was HC’s razor sharp defense.
The stage was set at the outset. HC’s Brian Biehl singled on an overthrow to first base, then scored on a double from Randy Byerly putting the team on the scoreboard 1-0.
Native came back strong with a double deep into left field from Levi Garber. Jayme Williams doubled Garber home, then scored the go-ahead run to take that slim 1-2 lead.
With one out in the top of the second, Matt Beavers sent the ball deep into center field for a single. Beavers advanced on a single from Emily Lanphear, scoring on Jason Schalow’s double to tie the game 2-2.
Schalow tried to give HC the lead run, but was tagged at home plate.
Native Mixed went three-up-three-down in the bottom of the second, but regained the lead in the bottom of the third.
Garber hit a 2-RBI in-the-park homerun to give Native a 2-4 lead going into the fourth inning.
The fourth inning was over in quick fashion; six batters, six outs.
Stacy Van Nest sparked a 5-run drive for HC with a single in the top of the fifth.
Schalow singled to center field; Ellena Villa singled to load the bases. Biehl hit a 2-RBI single to tie the game 4-4.
HC kept on going. Villa scored on Jen Byerly single; designated runner Beavers scored on Randy Byerly’s single; Dave Owen brought in the final fifth run for a healthy 7-4 lead.
Native had two runners on base with one out, looking for a come-back drive. Lacy Boyer popped out to Van Nest. Van Nest rocketed the ball to first for the double play deflating Native’s offensive effort.
HC’s Beavers singled in the top of the sixth, then had to watch the next two batters pop out. What looked like a short inning stretched out to 5 runs.
Two singles advanced Beavers to third base; Emily Lanphear’s single sent him home. Randy Byerly and Van Nest singled in runs; Owen doubled in the last two to give HC a substantial 12-4 lead.
HC’s defense tightened up on Native Mixed in the bottom of the sixth, holding the team to 2 runs, bringing home the 12-6 win.
The A/B Coed Division has one more series of pre-tournament games, Monday, Aug. 6, then goes into three nights of tournament play leading up to the championship game Wednesday, Aug. 15.
