The 2012 Bishop Invitational Swim Meet, held at the City Park Pool June 22-24, hosted 220 swimmers competing in 226 events.
The big three teams were Mammoth Lakes Swim Team with 54 athletes, Douglas Dolphins from Minden, Nev. with 45 and Bishop Swim Team with 41.
The Douglas Dolphins took the overall honors (1,613 points), followed by Mammoth Lakes (957) and Bishop Swim Team (754).
Individual swimmers were allowed to compete in 10 events and high point awards were given for each age group based on their total accumulated points.
Top Bishop swimmers included first place high point winners Mitchell Franks (10-year-old boys with 62 points) and Quinn Quesenberry (14-year-old girls with 52).
Second place high point winners were Brooke Winzenread (8-year-old girls, 54 points), Claire Jellison (14-year-old girls, 45) and Evan Meneses (15-year-old boys, 56).
Third place high point winners were Will Hennarty (6-year-old boys, 22 points), Lexie Whitehouse (9-year-old girls, 43), Juan Munoz (10-year-old boys, 22) and Kylie Meneses (17-year-old girls, 20s).
Bishop pool records have been kept since 1964. Seventeen pool records fell, six to a remarkable swimmer from Ridgecrest. Eighteen-year-old Joshua Hanson broke pool records in the 400 IM (4:16.40), the 1000 Free (10:06.55), the 100 Fly (54.57), the 100 Back (56.77), the 200 Free (1:47.18), and the 200 Breast (2:18.91).
Watching Hanson take 42 seconds off the 400 IM record and 18 seconds of the longstanding (2003) 1000 Free record was a real treat for spectators.
On the girls side, 13-year-old Shelby Koontz of the Douglas Dolphins broke three pool records: 400 IM (4:55.51), 500 Free (5:37.54), and 100 Free (55.65). The old 100 Free record of 57.33 had stood since 1997.
Other pool record breakers included 5-year-old Andrew Bui from Indian Wells Valley (50 Back, 57.75; 50 Fly, 1.00.53; and 100 Free, 1:38.43), Shaelin Morefield (Douglas Dolphins 16-year-old, 200 IM, 2:18.887; 200 Fly, 2:16.88), Kyle Johnston (Douglas Dolphin 17-year-old, 200 Fly, 2:08.40), Samantha Martin (Fallon Barracuda Swim Team, 200 Back, 2:23.94), and Mckenzie Kelly (College Area Swim Team, San Diego, 100 Free, 59.01).
Claire Jellison (14-year-old) set a new Bishop team record with her first swim of the 200-yard butterfly (2:37.34), taking 11 seconds off the old team record set in 2006 by Lucie Roepke.
Many swimmers turned in their personal bests.
The Bishop Swim Team was appreciative of the City of Bishop and all the many volunteers and sponsors who contributed to the meet’s success.
