Robert Ronald Behrendt, Jr.
Memorial Service for Robert Ronald Behrendt, Jr. will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 31 at Brune Mortuary, 325 W. Elm St. in Bishop.
Born Sept. 28, 1926 in Charleroi, Penn., Robert died March 18, 2012 at Renown Hospital in Reno.
He was educated at Sherwood Music Conservatory, Chicago, Ill. where he majored in Composition and Arranging. He did his general studies at DePaul University.
Bob joined the Air Force out of High School and played in Air Force Jazz Band. After the war, Bob went to college on the G.I. bill and earned his degree in music.
Bob married Phila Mills on June 23, 1951.
After a brief teaching career in Mississippi and playing for the Southernaires Dance Band, Bob joined the Stan Kenton Orchestra in the fall of 1960 and played in the band through 1964. Bob returned for a summer tour with the Band in 1965. During his time with Stan, Bob toured the United States extensively along with England, Scotland and Whales. Bob and family moved to Bishop in August of 1964 to take the music instructor position at the Bishop Union Elementary School where he taught for 21 years and retired in 1985.
Bob’s love for the Owens Valley and the outdoors was evident as you would often see him with his bird dogs in various fields, hunting quail and chuckar.
Bob is survived by his wife, Phila Mills Behrendt; eldest son, Bob Behrendt and his wife, Valerie Behrendt; grandson, Travis Behrendt and his wife, Jenn Behrendt; great-granddaughters, Kylie and Kinley Behrendt; granddaughter, Randi Behrendt; great-grandchildren, Aiden and Keeli Behrendt; step granddaughter, Rebecca Carlson; middle son, Rick Behrendt and his wife, Nicole Behrendt; grandchildren, Blaire, Adam and Clay Behrendt; youngest son, Kurt Behrendt and his wife Jeannie Behrendt; granddaughter, Cassandra Behrendt; sister, Elaine Haines; nephew, Eric Haines and his wife, Catherine Haines; cousin, Janet Behrendt; second cousin, Kim Hall; and various other cousins and friends.
