The Bishop Broncos Junior Varsity football team scored their second consecutive High Desert League championship last Thursday against the Desert Scorpions in what spectators have described as “the game of the century.”
Both teams were undefeated in league, so the championship title hinged on the outcome. The Broncos staged a comeback in the fourth quarter but the victory came down to a blocked field goal attempt by the Scorpions.
Bishop went up 6-0 on a TD by Jose Jimenez in the first quarter but was behind 6-14 at the half.
Desert extended the lead 6-20 in the third but touchdowns by Carl Olson and Jose Jimenez put Bishop in striking distance at 19-20.
Thomas Montoya did the striking with the go-ahead TD with Anthony Martinez completing the 2-point conversion and Bishop was ahead 27-20.
Desert answered with a score, but Grayson Hess made a tackle on the 2-point conversion to hold the lead.
Desert drove deep into Bishop territory to set up for a field goal, but Olson blocked the kick giving Bishop the win and the HDL championship.
“I’m really proud of the way the kids fought,” said coach Arnie Palu. “We were down, but the kids played hard and showed a lot of character in the way they responded.”
