Today is the day when tens of thousands of wanna-be zombies and ghouls around the world will growl and boogie in unison for the “Thrill the World.” It is an international attempt to set the world-record for simultaneous dance to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” song and video and Bishop’s undead will be joining in this year.
Erin Livingston organized the local dance and has been holding lessons all month long.
Thrill the World is an annual worldwide simultaneous dance to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” video for world records and charity. The group has succeeded four times in breaking their own record. Worldwide there are more than 200 events on five continents registered so far so another world record is definitely within reach, according to organizers.
The dance will take place at Bishop City Park. All ages and physical abilities are welcome. fifty dancers are expected and there are 45 signed up so far.
Practice will be held at the City Hall parking lot at 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday. There will be another run through at the Senior Center at the east end of the park at 6 p.m before the event.
In California the dance will be at 7 p.m. Saturday. Participants, ghouls, zombies and lycanthropes are advised to arrive at least one hour early to be included in the World Record.
There will be stickers for sale as well as orders for T-shirts.
Besides breaking a world record, the event is a fundraiser for the Bishop Union High School Dance Team.
The event coincides with the city’s own Halloween fun at the park. There will be a Best Zombie Contest (for the participating dancers only), Trunk-or-Treat, a fun run, and movies shown on the softball field.
“Experiencing the event itself is ‘thrilling’ for both dancers and on-lookers,” Livingston said in a press release. “It is, after all, an attempt to top a world record, dancing with a crowd of people while knowing that thousands of other people all over the world are dancing at the same time. With each refrain, and when Vincent Price starts his rap, the energy in the crowd is palpable. Of course, the audience hooting it up also helps the excitement and the fun.
“Best of all, it is a family friendly event that brings together all sorts of people. Differences fade away and we all just celebrate the love of music, dance, and having fun!”
