Four Coed C teams faced off Friday, Aug. 12, in the semifinal rounds of the championship tournament.
The CBC Crusaders went on to the finals and the championship, but first had to take on Unloaded.
The game went into extra innings before the Crusaders came out with a 1-point win.
Unloaded went out to an early lead that held until the sixth inning.
Mona Amado, Tony Alger and Amber Richards loaded the bases with singles, setting the stage for a 3-run top of the first.
The team’s defense held the Crusadaers to a 1-hit, 0-run bottom of the inning.
Unloaded took advantage of a slow-to-start Crusader defense with a 4-run second inning, extending the lead 0-7.
The Crusaders got into the game in the bottom of the second.
With Steve Veenker on base, Courtney Morrison doubled. Morrison scored on a Dave Arndal single to take a nibble out of the lead, 2-7.
Unloaded took one run back in the top of the third.
The Crusaders’ Cody Moffett sent a fly ball deep into left for a solo home run, narrowing the lead 3-8. The team took one more bite out of Unloaded’s lead in the bottom of the fourth when Morrison doubled in a run for a 4-8 score.
Unloaded mounted a serious offensive drive in the top of the sixth, loading the bases twice, but came away with no runs.
The Crusaders caught on fire in the bottom of the inning.
Moffet knocked a triple straight down the third base line, then came home on a Gae Thomas single.
With Marty Bradley and Carrie Linder on base, Steve Veenker hit a 3-RBI homerun to tie the score 8-8.
The Crusaders weren’t done yet. Arndal put the Crusaders ahead 9-8 with a 1-RBI single.
Unloaded tied the game up, 9-9, with an Alger run off a Witman double, sending the game into extra innings.
The Crusaders defense held Unloaded in the top of the eighth.
With a runner on base in the bottom of the inning, Veenker’s hit sends in the winning run, sending the Crusaders on to the champinship round.
In the contest between the Chuckawallees and I-Hiimu, the latter jumped to an early 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
I-Hiimu came back in the bottom of the second with the first five batters recording hits and 4 runs, putting I-Hiimu ahead 9-0.
The Chuckawallees woes followed them through the third inning.
I-Hiimu rubbed salt in the wound with 2 runs in the bottom of the third.
The Chuckawallees got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth. Jeremy Torres doubled into center field; Cortez singled and Robert Eddy sent a sacrifice fly deep to score Torres.
I-Hiimu took the run back in the bottom of the inning to maintain an 11-point lead at 12-1.
Chuckawallees’ bats woke up in the top of the sixth. Wally Eddy and Root walked. Margaret Cortez singled in a run, but got greedy and was tagged out heading for second.
Jeremy Torres and Cal Cortez singled to load the bases. Robert Eddy doubled in 2 runs; Sam Cortez singled in 1 and Eric Eddy found the hole in right field for the final and fifth run of the inning. The Chuckawallees ate into I-Hiimu’s lead 11-6.
I-Hiimu answered the threat in the bottom of the sixth with a 4-run inning, and a 15-6 lead.
The Chuckawallees had two more runs in them. With Wally Eddy on base and one out, Leon Eddy hit a triple that morphed into a 2-RBI homer on errors.
The game ended 15-8 with I-Hiimu advancing to the finals.
