By Friday morning, two Bishop competitors were still in the running for the National High School Rodeo finals.
After the first and second go in the CHSRA state finals at Tri-County Fairgrounds, Chase Bowen and Bodie Kruse were eligible for the final short go Friday evening. Results from last night’s competition will determine who advances to nationals.
Kruse and partner Timothy Robison have a combined time of 45.86 in team roping. Fifteen teams competed last night to choose the five headed to Gillette, Wyo. July 17-23.
Bareback rider Chase Bowen scored a 67 in both his rides. He and 2010 national champion Casey Meroshnekoff were the only two riders to hang on for the required 8 seconds.
The other two Bishop athletes fell short of the cut.
Emily Cleland, competing in goat tying, improved her time by more than 2 seconds in her second go. But, her combined time in the event was too high to advance.
Haley Oney was just short of the cut-off in barrel racing with a combined time of 37.501. Oney’s second go in pole bending was nearly a second faster than her first, but short of the mark.
(Note: Thursday’s story incorrectly identified the national bareback champion as Colton Onyett.)
