The City of Bishop wants to know how its citizens are getting around and plan on getting around in the 21st century. It is set to update its long term transportation plan and will hold an informational open house on May 12 to open the dialogue between the city and its citizens on mobility.
The Getting Around in Bishop Open House will be from 3-7 p.m. Thursday, May 12 at City Hall, 377 W. Line St.
Citizens concerned about streets, sidewalks, paths, parking lots and transit in and around the city should plan to attend. The open house will provide a chance for one-on-one discussion with city staff and consultants about the plan and the public’s ideas.
The city is currently updating the transportation section of its General Plan, also called a “Circulation Element” or “Mobility Element.” This section of the General Plan has not been updated since 1994. Recognizing that communities evolve over time and changes occur in the environment, it is time to update the Bishop Mobility Element to a 2011 perspective.
The updated Mobility Element will contain goals and policies pertaining to all modes of transportation. Long-range plans for streets and bikeways will be updated, and strategies for enhanced transit and pedestrian accessibility will be addressed. The Mobility Element is important because activities, such as street improvements the city, businesses, and individuals make in the city will follow the guide provided by the Mobility Element.
According to a press release, “Public participation is key to a successful update of the Mobility Element and the open house will be one of the best chances to have your voice heard in the process. Bishop residents and business owners are encouraged to attend, obtain information, and provide input.”
The open house will be entirely informal with staff present to answer questions, provide maps and share information as needed; no formal presentations will be made at this meeting.
