Murphy’s Law could be applied to the Bishop Broncos’ match-up with the Burroughs Burros Saturday. With the exception of a few moments of great Broncos baseball, everything that could go wrong … you know the rest.
Too many Broncos stranded on base, too many errors, too many walks, but coach Tim Reid found the silver lining in the 8-5 loss. “I was proud of the way the team battled,” said Reid. “We shouldn’t have even been in the game,” he said in reference to the tough Burros, a team that had leveled Rosamond 20-4 in a pre-league game March 22.
Given the drubbing the Burros gave the Roadrunners, there should be some serious joy in Mudville for the Broncos once High Desert League starts Tuesday, April 5. Bishop held Burroughs to two runs through five innings and led until the seventh.
The Broncos recorded 14 hits against Burroughs but left 15 men on base through the course of eight innings. “We just didn’t have timely hits,” said Reid.
Burroughs sent out its first challenge with the third batter in the top of the first. A two-run homer put the Burros ahead 2-0.
Bishop answered with singles from Chance Callahan and Keith Tatum but left two men on base and no runs at the end of the inning.
Pitcher Tanner Kruse, a dreaded strikeout king in the pre-season, was not having a stellar day with three walks and five hit batters. But, he came through with strategic strikeouts in the top of the second, retiring the side in short order.
Right fielder Doug Watterson saved the Broncos’ bacon with a great catch to end the Burroughs threat in the third.
By the bottom of the fourth, the Broncos’ heavy hitters got aggressive. Kruse, Nathan Coakley and Taylor Neubauer all singled, loading the bases. Callahan’s single scored Kruse; Aaron Puls’ walk scored Coakley, tying the score at 2-all. Singles from Tatum and Watterson, plus a Jared Davis base on balls put the Broncos ahead 5-2.
Kruse held off a serious Burroughs threat in the fifth, but the Burros came back to score a run in the sixth, eating into the lead at 5-3.
Another two-run Burros homer in the seventh tied the score,. The Broncos were in a position to take the lead and end the game, but left three runners on base at the third out, forcing the game into extra innings.
Burroughs scored three runs on fielding errors and the Broncos had no answer. Final score: 5-8.
The Broncos travel to Tehachapi Thursday for the final pre-league game, then host Cal City Tuesday, April 5.
