Eagles baseball/softball update

The Lone Pine Golden Eagles ended last weekend’s baseball tournament at Yerington, Nev. with a split decision: two wins on Friday and two losses to Wittle High, the 2010 Nevada state champions on Saturday.
Greg Green was the winning pitcher in the Eagles’ 8-2 victory over Smith Valley, striking out six.
On the hitting side, Michael Palsrok went 2 for 2 with 3 runs; Michael Cappello was 2 for 2 with a triple, 3 runs and 3 RBI. Umberto Romero was also perfect at the plate with 3 for 3.
Next, the Eagles faced the Fernley High JV squad, shutting them out 6-0. Palsrok and Romero combined in the no-hitter. Palsrok was batting 1000 with 2 for 2; Seth Muniz was 2 for 2 with a double and Josh Oswald hit two triples and recorded 3 RBI.
Despite the loss in Saturday’s 6-8 loss to Wittle, coach Troy Strawn saw a lot that he liked from his team.
“The first game was a great game,” said coach Troy Strawn, “Mike (Cappello) pitched very well and we were in it to the end.”
Oswald was high man on offense for the Eagles, going 2 for 3 with a 2-run homer. Cappello went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI. Seth Muniz was 1 for 2 with a double, 2 runs and an RBI.
The second game against Wittle ended 16-3 with the Eagles running into control issues on the mound.
Lone Pine dropped its first Desert Mountain League match up with Mammoth Tuesday, 1-2. “We got the bases loaded a few times,” said Strawn. “We just couldn’t bring them across home plate.”
Palsrok started as pitcher and was relieved in the sixth inning by Cappello.
At bat, Cappello went 2 for 3 with 2 doubles; Green was 1 for 3 with an RBI.

Lady Eagles
Yerington proved to be a good tournament for the Lady Eagles softball team at 3-1.
“It helped us recover from the Bishop game,” said coach Dan Gonzalez in reference to the Eagles’ loss last week.
The Eagles shellacked Smith Valley twice on Saturday with 21-0 and 22-14 wins. “Smith Valley is a young team and has some pitching issues,” said Gonzalez.
“The game with Truckee (on Saturday) was a very evenly matched game,” said Gonzalez.
The Eagles’ 7-6 win over Truckee was a very evenly matched contest, according to Gonzalez. “We were faster,” he said, “better at stealing bases.”
The one loss came later Saturday against the Kern Valley Broncs, a High Desert League team.
“The game was much better than the score reflects,” said Gonzales.
The Eagles held Kern Valley to 2 runs through the first four innings.
In the fourth, the Broncos went on a 10-run blitz. “We had an injured fielder, our defense just fell apart,” said Gonzalez.
