Lady Warriors fall to Beatty

December 17, 2010

The Big Pine Lady Warriors got off to a strong start Tuesday against the visiting Beatty Hornets. The squad could not maintain the momentum against the aggressive Nevada team and lost 40-66.
“We are giving great effort,” said coach Dave Mettam, “even though we came out on the losing end. We played against very experienced girls and did not quit.”
Marissa Lemus led the early assault against the Hornets’ press, putting Big Pine ahead 6-3.
The Hornets settled into their game, slowing the pace under the boards and started racking up points and fouls. By the end of the first quarter, Big Pine trailed 7-17.
Big Pine pulled to within 4 points of Beatty in the second quarter, but the Hornets switched on the press and went on a scoring tear with 10 unanswered points.
With just a minute off the clock in the second quarter, the Hornets had eight fouls against the Warriors’ four. Beatty started fouling out players but with the depth of their bench, the Hornets had bodies to spare. By the half, the Hornets pulled ahead 20-36.
“Our half court trap is producing steals,” said Mettam. “We just need to convert those into fast break points.”
Big Pine came out in the second half with an 8-point scoring run. Beatty answered with a run of 10 points and pulled steadily ahead through the final quarter, ending the game at 40-66.
“We are a work in progress,” said Mettam, “but I’m proud that we are making strides to be dominant in league play.”
