Betty Jean Sorrells
1925-2010

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today, Saturday, Dec. 18 at the Mt. Whitney Funeral Home, 220 E. Post St. in Lone Pine for Betty Jean Sorrells.  A potluck gathering for family and friends will be held after the service in Independence at the Owens Valley School Multi-Purpose building at approximately 1 p.m.
Born Sept. 30, 1925 to Carl and Ruth Graham of Riverside, Betty married her high school sweetheart Gerald W. (Jerry) Sorrells in 1945 and they were married for 49 years until his death in 1994.
Betty will be remembered by many loving friends and neighbors. She moved from the Inland Empire in 1968 to Mammoth Lakes and then to Lone Pine in 1972. After her husband’s death, she moved to Independence in 1995 and loved it there.
Betty loved her monthly bunco night, a good baseball or football game, community concerts in the park and watching her daughter Janis bowl. She also loved to travel, and had especially fond memories of traveling to Washington, D.C. and seeing the monuments, a cruise to Alaska and her visits to Hawaii.
Betty was an avid gardener with “ten green thumbs,” but hated those “darn squirrels.” She loved to can and dehydrate her fruit, make jam and pies. Betty was quite the cook, with potato salad and spaghetti sauce being some of her favorites. She delighted in preparing desserts for family and dear friends and even the dogs would get a cookie. Betty took pride in her family and will be sorely missed by them.
Betty is survived by her four children, Carol Sorrells and fiancée Allen Lybrand, Jeanne Baumann, Sue Gralla and husband Steve and Janis Odum and husband Darrell; eight grandchildren, Bob, Cheryl, Jennifer, Julie, Stephanie, Robin, Aimee and Debbie; four great-grandchildren, Victoria, Lexie, Nora, Sammy and soon to be here, Owen; sister, Barbara; and her brother, Carl.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Betty’s name to ICARE (Inyo County Animal Resources and Education), P.O. Box 76, Bishop, CA 93515 or to the charity of one’s choice.
