Jeanne Lehman
1925-2010

Jeanne Lehman’s life will be celebrated at the Bishop United Methodist Church at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4. The service will be conducted by Pastor Kathleen Puntar.
Born in Dallas on July 21, 1925, the second daughter of Ida Mae and Jack Perry, Jeanne died Friday evening, Nov. 19, 2010 in Bishop. She was 85.
Jeanne spent her childhood in Oregon and Southern California. In 1941, Jeanne married Boyd Lehman who was a teacher and school administrator. After Pearl Harbor, Boyd enlisted in the U.S. Army and served until the war ended. Boyd and Jeanne and their three children lived primarily in Yucaipa and later in Tehachapi. The Methodist Church was always a focus of their family lives. They sang in church choirs, taught Sunday School, served on lay boards and formed lifelong friendships in every church they attended.
The Lehmans moved to Bishop in 1967 to be near their daughter, Linda, son-in-law, Richard, and their first grandson, Jeff. Boyd served as superintendent of Bishop’s Elementary School District for six years until his retirement in 1973. Boyd and Jeanne were always happiest when surrounded by their children and grandchildren. They were the hub of a growing family.
After Boyd’s death in 1975, Jeanne became employed for the first time since her marriage. She worked in Carol Taylor’s Hallmark Shop on Main Street for five years and later spent an 18-year career as a sales clerk at the Spellbinder Bookstore. She was an avid reader so her “reviews” of books the store sold were often helpful. She retired from that position at age 76.
As family and friends share memories of time spent with Jeanne, she is often described as wise, funny, strong, independent, practical, smart and loving. She has always been the solid, sound center of her family – a center whose pull was felt by all, no matter how far their travels. Her last difficult months were in hospitals and the Care Center, surrounded always be people who love her.
Jeanne is survived by her daughters, Linda Arnold and Barbara Womack; son, Steve Lehman and partner Doris Morrison; son-in-law, Richard Arnold; grandchildren and their spouses, Jeff Perry and Robin Bolser, Aaron Storey and Anna Lisa Storey, April Leeson and husband Tim, Tabitha Womack and husband Cliff, Cameron Lehman and wife April, and Colby Lehman; and eight great-grandchildren, Kedijah, Tyrese and DeVonte Womack, Pauline and Gunnar Storey, June and Maya Perry and Wyatt Lehman.
She leaves her family with wonderful memories and sad hearts.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be given in Jeanne’s memory to the Bishop United Methodist Church or to Hospice of the Owens Valley.
