Andrea Stanowski
1948-2010

A celebration of life barbecue and party will be held in the spring of 2011 at Elks Park in Bishop for Andrea Stanowski.
Born on Nov. 30, 1948 in Detroit, Mich., Andrea died Nov. 4, 2010 at home in Bishop.
Andrea was an animal caretaker and cook for Rock Creek Pack Station.
“Growing up, we lived in a zoo. She had any kind of animal you could keep: lizards, bunnies, turtles, dogs, cats, a crow named Billy and even a six-foot Iguana. She was a talented artist. Andrea was a hard worker and always had a job … we will miss her very much,” said her mother, Loraine Yuhas.
Andrea was a talented Afghan show dog breeder and animal trainer. She and her husband ran Anshasta Afghans. She sold fudge at fairs, worked at a glue factory and sold hearing aids for the family business.
After graduating from West Covina High school, she married James Stanowski and they shared love and life together for 32 years until his death in 1998 at Follows Camp, in the mountains above Azusa. Jim was a Vietnam veteran and Andrea nursed him for many years as an Agent Orange victim.
In 2001 she participated in the Rock Creek Pack Station’s Owens Valley Horse Drive and moved to Rock Creek the following spring to become the cook for the pack station crew. During winters, she fed and cared for retired mules and horses.
Andrea joined the Elks Lodge in Bishop and became an active participant in the Lodge’s charitable and social events.
In addition to her mother, Andrea is survived by her brother, Mathew; brother and sister-in-law, Lawrence and Ginger and their children, Robert and Ann; and her 9-year-old black lab, Sutter.
