Merlin ‘Moe’ Fletcher

1923-2010

A celebration of life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 13 at Mt. Whitney Baptist Church in Lone Pine for Merlin Edgar “Moe” Fletcher. A luncheon will be provided at the church following burial at the Mt Whitney Cemetery.

Born to Harry Carlisle Fletcher and Louise (Mossbacher) Fletcher on Sept. 9, 1923 in Los Angeles, one of three children, Moe died Nov. 1, 2010 at Southern Inyo Hospital in Lone Pine.

Moe was fascinated with racing, baseball, big band music, airplanes, machinery and history. He loved to share his excitement with others. And he was always eager to learn more.

Moe practically raised his nephew Spencer Faulkner, and shared his love of racing with him. He even had his own stock car that he and Spence raced all over Southern California.

During World War II, Moe served with the U.S. Navy. Operating a Higgins Landing Craft from the USS Harris, he landed marines, tanks, artillery and supplies for several island invasions in the Pacific.

In 1961, he married his beloved Virginia “Ginny” Pauline, and treasured her until her death in 2001.

He worked for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power for many years as a Maintenance and Construction Helper in the Owens Valley.

Moe became a servant of Jesus Christ as an older adult, and God enabled him to serve Jesus for many years. He loved to use his abilities to share Christ’s love with others. Anybody who spent quality time with Moe experienced the love that God had given him.

In November 2009, Moe moved into the Southern Inyo Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility, where the diligent and loving care of the staff was a joy to him in the final year of his life.

Moe was preceded in death by his brother, Don Fletcher; Don’s daughter and son, Terry and Ben; sister, Phillis “Tootie” Faulkner of Apple Valley; and her son, Spencer Faulkner.

Moe is survived by his stepdaughter, Betty Lundstrum-Cantrell and her children, Elisabeth Sanchez, Cathleen Huntley and Jessica Thomas who gave him 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; stepson, Zane Kellogg and his children, Lisa Marie Kellogg and Christina Kellogg who gave him four grandchildren; nephew, Dan; and the children of Moe’s nephew, Spencer: Laura Montgomery and Robert Faulker, and their children; as well as his beloved church family.
