Lloyd R. Pettengill

Born in Bishop in 1919, Lloyd moved to Southern California with his family while still a boy, and came back here to live in 1998 to spend his remaining years. He was 91.
He loved the area and loved to go fishing with his double cousin George Meinke.
He was drafted into the United States Marine Corps in World War II and served in Guam and Iwo Jima. He was a witness to both raisings of the American Flag on Mount Suribachi on Feb. 23, 1945. In 2007 he was invited to participate in the annual Iwo Jima Flag Raising ceremonies in Sacaton, Ariz., where he was recognized as one of the “Guests of Honor.”
He enjoyed visiting with other Iwo Jima survivors, as well as with some of the surviving Navajo Code Talkers. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Pauline, who died in 2003.
He is survived by his son, Wayne Pettengill of Casa Grande, Ariz.; daughter DeAnn Easley of Simi Valley; five grandchildren; and 6 great grandchildren.
