The Big Pine Warriors volleyball team lost a hard-fought, homecourt battle against the feisty Lee Vining Tigers Tuesday. The Tigers took three of four games but the winning margin in each was no greater than 5 points.
“We were pretty good,” said coach Angie Argyle, “but we could have done better. We’re having trouble finishing matches. We beat Lee Vining in tournament play and should have been able to beat them in league play.”
The Warriors are now 2-4 in league play and 4-6 overall.
The Warriors came out of the gate strong with 6 straight points on Alicia Peterson’s serve. The Tigers got back in it, drawing to within 2 points. After a series of quick service breaks, the Tigers tied the Warriors 9-9.
The Big Pine squad settled down, exchanging long volleys with precise set-ups. The Warriors fell behind by 1 point, but steadily pulled ahead to finish off the game 25-20.
The combination of Peterson’s and Kaity Barlow’s serves, plus aggressive play at the net, started off game two in Big Pine’s favor at 7-3. The Tigers’ rocket-fire serves were returned, in kind, by Warrior Su-Wah-Vee Mason.
The evenly-matched teams stayed close in score until the Tigers pulled ahead 14-20. Big Pine could not close the gap and Lee Vining won, 20-25.
The Tigers came on strong early in game 3, pulling ahead by 3-12. The Warriors blasted back taking a 3-point lead at 22-19. Lee Vining had the momentum and scored 6 points to Bishop’s 1, taking game three 23-25.
The Warriors and Tigers stayed close through the early rounds of game four, the Warriors out-hustling the Tigers but not able to pull ahead. The Tigers picked up their game, widened the scoring gap and finished off the match with a 21-25 win.
“We just didn’t have good stats,” said Argyle. “Our spikes and digs were down.”
The Warriors play the 6-0 Baker Braves, Friday. “Baker has always had a strong team, but if we play our game, we can beat them,” said Argyle.
