Buna Lurlene Browne Drew
1928-2014

On June 15, 2014, longtime Independence and Owens Valley resident Buna Lurlene Browne Drew passed away. Lurlene was born in Kenton, Tenn. on Aug. 10, 1928. She was one of 11 children in the Browne family. As a child, Lurlene moved west with her family, eventually settling in the Owens Valley.
In October 1946, Lurlene married Claude V. Drew at the home of Claude’s parents at the Haiwee Reservoir in southern Owens Valley. Soon thereafter they moved to Mojave where Lurlene became a full-time mom and Claude worked for the L. A. Department of Water and Power. They had four children – Karen, Claudia, Peggy and Vincent. In 1965, Claude received a promotion with the Department of Water and Power and the family moved to Independence. Lurlene lived in Independence until her passing.
During the many years that her family, “The Drew Crew,” took on the task of putting on the 4th of July barbecue in Independence, Lurlene was there ramroding kids and serving the best pit barbecue in the Owens Valley. She loved to garden and she spent many hours tending to her favorite flower, the rose and she passed that love on to her children. Lurlene will be remembered as a soft-spoken and kind woman who relished being surrounded by her kids, grand kids and extended family members.
Lurlene was preceded in death by her husband, Claude V. Drew; grandsons, Christopher Stuart Drew and Quintin Walter Richard; and son-in-law, Mark Felton.
Lurlene is survived by her sisters, Sara Castleman and Mayme (Keith) Drew; and brother, Wallace Browne. In her immediate family she is survived by her daughters, Karen Richard, Claudia (Roger) Parker and Peggy Felton; son Vincent (Carol) Drew; grandchildren, Ron (Maureen) Richard, granddaughter-in-law, Jalaine Beems Richard, Andy Richard, Christina (Dan) Parker-DeMulling, Scott (Dawn) Parker, Buna Faith (Robert) Felton-McAlister, “CK” (Tracey) Felton, Charlie Felton, Zach Drew, Justin Drew and Jordan Drew; great-grandchildren, Logan Richard, Ryan Richard, Erin Richard, Taylor DeMulling, Brayden DeMulling, “DJ” (Melinda) Parker, Mark Dale McAlister, Michael McAlister, Braydyn Felton and Colton Felton; and great-great-granddaughter, Gracie Marie Parker.
