Paul Alan Martin
Born April 22, 1929 in St. Louis Park, Minn., Paul Alan Martin, age 85, a resident of Bishop for 48 years passed away on June 10, 2014 at Renown Hospital in Reno.
After growing up in the Minneapolis/St. Paul suburbs, Paul served in the U.S. Army for two years during the Korean conflict in the early 1950’s. Originally stationed near Denver, Colo., his unit was reassigned to the atomic testing being carried out near Mercury, Nev.
After his discharge, he returned home to Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minn. to begin a career in banking and finance. It was there that Paul met his future wife, Joanne. They were married in 1954 and moved to Southern California in 1955 where their two sons Robert (Bob) and Lee were born. While working there in the banking/real estate industry during the 1960’s Paul became aware of an opportunity in the Bishop area for a qualified person to open a new federal savings and loan. Paul, accepting the challenge as he often did moved the family to Bishop in 1965 and opened Mountain Federal Savings and Loan in an office located on Main Street.
Paul became active in the local community and served as President of the Lions Club of Bishop in 1968-69. Several years later, in an effort to expand his business and bring additional capital into the area, Paul arranged a merger with Valley Federal Savings and Loan, and served as the VP/Branch Manager in a newly constructed office in Bishop. Paul retired in 1976 and both he and Joanne continued their comfortable life in Bishop enjoying the Eastern Sierra and their many friends.
Paul is survived by his wife, Joanne of Bishop; sons Robert of Sunnyvale and Lee of Durham; grandson, Alan; and granddaughter Jamie.
Private service to be held at a later date.
