Northern Inyo Hospital Board of Directors board member Dr. John Ungersma recently began a three-year term as treasurer of the Association of California Healthcare Districts.
In a recent news release, the ACHD Board of Directors said it is pleased to make the announcement. Ungersma said he is also very pleased to accept the position of treasurer for this prestigious organization. ACHD is an association of 77 state healthcare districts that serve 10 percent of California’s population, approximately 10 million people, he explained.
No stranger to public service, Ungerma is a retired Naval Officer and Orthopedic Surgeon who served in Desert Shield and Desert Storm. In 1999, Ungersma ended his 21-year active-duty and 27-year active- reserves military career.
“Additionally, Dr. Ungersma is an assistant adjunct professor of surgery at F. Edward Herbert School of Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland,” ACHD Executive Director Tom Petersen said.
Getting back to ACHD, Ungersma said, “47 of the 77 districts have hospitals. The remainder have healthcare programs that provide ambulance, child and elderly, diabetic and other outpatient care health-related activities.” ACHD also provides in-home support and educational services in 40 of the state’s 58 counties. The 62-year-old organization is headquartered in Roseville, although “we meet all over the state throughout the year” for an annual legislative meeting and many other committee meetings. According to Petersen, ACHD also “provides leadership education, operations and communication support to its member districts and is a principal legislative advocate on their behalf.”
Ungersma has been actively involved with ACHD activities for 10 years, first as a member of the Legislative Advocacy Committee and he is now serving his second three-year term as a director. He was elected treasurer because “Dr. Ungersma’s understanding of the association and how it supports the membership couples with his leadership experience as a naval officer, making him well suited for the position, which also includes chairing the Finance Committee,” Petersen said.
