Francis ‘Frank’ J. Byrne

Francis passed away Jan. 16, 2014 in Arizona. He grew up in Bishop during the ’30s and early ’40s with his four brothers and sister. They lived on North Home Street for many years with their parents, John and Agnes.
Frank and his brother Tom were great athletes, particularly in football and were on many championship teams in California.
In 1953 Frank joined the U.S. Air Force and quickly became a “Top Gun” with his flying skills in the F-100 Fighter plane and later the F-104. He flew more than 100 missions during the Vietnam War and was decorated with the Distinguished Flying Cross along with receiving many other honors. He retired in 1973 as a Lt. Colonel in the Air Force.
After his retirement he used his flying skills for the Forest Service and many corporations. He often said his heart was always in Bishop.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Nancy; and their daughter, “Jenna;” granddaughter, Aauyh; extended family; and many friends.
Memorial services were held Jan. 25 in Phoenix, Ariz. with full military honors. Interment will be in California.
