Evelyn Lillie Nelson
1911-2014

Evelyn Nelson, a longtime Lone Pine resident, went to be with her Savior Feb. 3, 2014 at the age of 102.
Born Evelyn Lillie Wiltfang on Dec. 30, 1911 to Leonard and Carrie Wiltfang in Eugene, Ore. She lived 77 years in Inyo County and most of those years in Lone Pine. She was crowned the first Miss Inyo County at the Keeler Pool in July 1929 and graduated from Lone Pine High School in 1930. She had been a great fan of – and player on – the girls’ basketball team. She was married to Delbert George Nelson in August of that same year.
She and Delbert had five children. She is survived by her daughters, Lois Wilson, Janet Brackney and Doris Brackney, all of Lone Pine, and Nancy Dubie of Tehachapi.
She was preceded in death by her baby son, Leonard; husband, Delbert; her parents; all of her siblings, Ruby Skinner, Ivadell Smith, Opal Burkhardt and brother, Leonard Wiltfang; and two grandsons and one great-grandson.
She had 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 23 great-great-grandchildren and is known lovingly to all of them as Grandma or Granny. They live spread out between California, Arizona, Oregon, Colorado and Pennsylvania.
She loved her family and was happiest at big family gatherings.
Evelyn was a strong Christian lady and was a member of the Nazarene Church for more than 60 years and her pastors were always welcome in her home. She loved to travel and went with any of the family when invited, but she was also not afraid to take off on her own, taking friends or family with her.
She also knit many, many sweaters, baby clothes and blankets for family and friends. Many of the knit items were done while carpooling from Lone Pine to Independence where she worked for the Probation Department for 23 years.
There will be no viewing.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 15 the Nazarene Church, 235 N. Washington St. in Lone Pine.
Burial will be at the Mt. Whitney Cemetery.
