John Ross Storm
John Ross Storm passed away on Jan. 9, 2014 at home in Flagstaff, Ariz. He was born on March 30, 1924 in the city of Detroit, Mich., the son of the late Arthur and Frances Storm and brother of the late Arthur A. Storm and Donald J. Storm.
Upon graduation from high school, John enlisted in the Army Air Force. During his time with the Army Air Force he served as a Flight Engineer in the B-17 and B-19 planes. He was honorably discharged in 1946. Shortly thereafter he married Jean Frederick of Bradford, Pa. on Sept. 14, 1946.
During the following years, John graduated from Penn State University in 1952 as a Civil Engineer. He accepted a position with the California Division of Highways (Caltrans). He spent the next 28 years working out of the Marysville and Bishop headquarters. Upon retiring he became Director of the Nevada County Transportation Commission. When he retired from this position due to health issues, he and Jean moved to Chandler, Ariz. where they lived for 20 years. While there, he became the manager of the Sunbird Postal Office. He also was active in the Sun Lakes/Sunbird Stamp Club and the Coin Club. He loved the history of both stamps and coins.
He was especially pleased to become a member of The United Empire Loyalistâ€™s Association of Canada when they accepted documentation which proved that he was a direct descendant of Jacob Ross, a United Empire Loyalist in 1783.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons, Donald John Storm of Ridgecrest, John Robert Storm and spouse, Suzanne Howard Storm; daughter, Jean Smithies Alden and spouse, Russell; four grandchildren, William D. Smithies, John M. Smithies, Jocelyn H. Storm and Jillian N. Storm Hampton; and seven great-grandchildren. Also he is survived by his sister, Frances Storm Wolak of Florida and Sandra Storm of Hawaii.
