Gregory Joseph Turner
Longtime Bishop resident Gregory Joseph Turner passed away from cancer at the Veterans Medical Center in Reno on Nov. 26, 2013 at the age of 64.
Born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on Jan. 9, 1949, he was raised there, participating in the Catholic Church and playing hockey until his family moved to San Dimas in 1962. After graduating from San Dimas High School, he enlisted in the United States Army and served for three years, participating in the Vietnam War as a medivac helicopter technician, helping to save countless lives. Honorably discharged, he earned an
airframe and powerplant certificate from Northorp Institute of Technology and pursued a career in mechanical aviation.
He met his wife, Kathleen, in 1972 in Whittier and they
married in 1973.
After working as a helicopter mechanic for the commercial fishing and oil industries in Southern California, he and his wife relocated to the Owens Valley in 1984 because of their shared love of the area, especially the fishing and natural beauty it provided. While there they raised their three children.
Gregory continued to work as an aviation mechanic and inspector throughout his career in both the private and commercial fields until his service-related disability forced him to retire.
He is preceded in death by his father, Harold Turner; sister, Valerie Meek; and brother, Mark Turner.
He is survived by Kathleen, his wife of 40 years; their three children, son, Michael and grandson, Lucas, of Bishop; son, Brian; and daughter, Amanda and her husband, Eric, of Santa Barbara. He is also survived by his mother, Eugenie of British Colombia, Canada; brothers, Lennard and Richard and his wife, Nancy, of the Yukon Territory, Canada; and numerous nieces and nephews throughout the United States, Canada and Australia.
A memorial for Greg will be held in the spring at North Lake, his favorite fishing spot.
