Eugene David Shaffer
Eugene David Shaffer, 90, of Apple Valley, passed away Friday, Dec. 27 2013.
He was born Feb. 22, 1923, in Cleveland, Ohio. Eugene, fondly known as Dave, graduated from Bishop High School in 1940. He went to work for Cal Interstate Telephone Company in Bishop after graduating high school. He enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and fought in World War II as a Navy pilot. He married Thelma Norberg in 1946, and they lived together in Bishop before relocating to Big Bear Lake in 1962.
After the war, Dave went back to work for Cal Interstate Telephone Company, which became Continental Telephone Co. and eventually Verizon, until he retired in 1982.
He loved to fish, hunt, play golf and travel.
Dave was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma, one daughter, Barbara, and is survived by two children: Gary Shaffer (Bonnie) and Julie Romans (Rick), of Big Bear City, seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to The National Breast Cancer Research Institute.
Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, at Pioneer Cemetery on West Line Street in Bishop.
