Lester Leon Bell

Lester Leon Bell, born in Oklahoma on Aug. 2, 1920, to Fred and Nettie Bell, passed away Nov. 28, 2013 peacefully at his home in Bishop. He was 93.
Lester graduated from Wasco High School where his family was in the oil business. Lester served in the U.S. Army. He married Betty McCall in 1942; they had known each other since childhood. They embarked on a lifetime of adventures together. They had three children, Lonnie, Pam and Dan.
They were entrepreneurs and owned several businesses, including a feed and pet store, a landscaping business and a sporting goods store. They enjoyed camping and would vacation to June Lake every year. They loved it so much, they later moved to June Lake where he worked as a bus driver and custodian for the Lee Vining schools. They would later move to Mono City and open a sporting goods store in Lee Vining, ”Bell’s Sporting Goods,” which their youngest son Dan and his wife Candy still operate today. Lester and Betty also had a love for Baja, Mexico and would vacation there often. Eventually, they built a small home on the shores of the Sea of Cortez in Baja in the small development of Punta Chivato. They enjoyed the community and made several good friends in their time there.
In their most recent years they moved to Bishop where they enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Lester looked forward to his Sunday afternoon card games with Betty and his daughter and son-in-law, Pam and George. These games were a great time to visit, and also a great excuse for him to eat several of his favorite treats – COOKIES.
Lester is survived by his wife of 71 years, Betty; son and daughter-in-law, Lonnie and Noel Bell of Bishop; daughter and son-in-law, Pam and George Kelley of Big Pine; and son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Candy Bell of Lee Vining; granddaughter, Cori Harris of Texas; grandson, Rick and his wife Gina Ellis of Bishop; grandson, Danny and wife, Bobbi Bell of Missouri; grandson, Johnny Bell of Nevada; and grandson, Blake and his wife Samantha Bell of Bishop; and great-grandchildren, Trenton, Garrett, Erika, Olivia, Gabriel and Brennen.
