Big things brewing in Bishop

California’s thriving craft brewing scene has arrived in Bishop. The opening of family-friendly, sustainability-conscious Mountain Rambler Brewery & Pub is scheduled just in time for next summer’s soaring temperatures.
Unlike a café and different from a bar, the Mountain Rambler vision is one of beer-on-tap, full-menu pub and “full-on production” craft brewery – modern speak for microbrewery – said Joe Lane, the brew pub’s owner, operating manager, president and chief brewer. “Pubs are a tradition in England, Ireland and Germany” and in line with the family pub and gathering place tradition, Mountain Rambler will not serve spirits.
Lane plans to start out by brewing various ales, such as India pale and porter, and standard beer types, like American pale and wheat beer, using “Bishop water (which) has good chemistry for brewing.” The hops, barley, yeast and water elixirs will be available on tap at the pub, and in 64-ounce growlers and kegs. People will even be able to get a peek at the tanks and brewing process from inside the pub. Guest beers, not brewed on site, will also be served.
