In the final volleyball game of the High Desert League Thursday at home, Bishop’s Lady Broncos faced off against Rosamond with the league co-championship, shared with Frazier Mountain, on the line.
The whistle blew and the court sprang to life. The Roadrunners hit their stride early on and led for the first 15 points of the game with the Broncos close at their heels. Lora Terrasas and Dana Wilcher were pivotal in pulling the Lady Broncos together until they were playing as a dynamic unit. In the remaining minutes of the game, Bishop pulled ahead, rapidly taking the lead and ultimately achieving victory with a final score of 25-18.
As the action moved into the second set, the Broncos began to gain points with incredible communication on the court and a forceful precision that leaves Rosamond scrambling. Team captain Brooke Callahan played a great match with much of the point gap a direct result of her powerful kills and assists. The Broncos finished the second set with an 8-point advantage and a score of 25-17.
The third and final set was full of electric anticipation, with neither team willing to relinquish the victory without a fight. Again, Callahan led this game skillfully. The Broncos had the upper hand in points for nearly the entire game, though Rosamond remained only a few short points away, bringing the competition to a fever pitch. Also integral to Bishop’s success in the third set was Brianna Coakley who played an important role in returning the ball where it often struck the floor. Although it was the closest of the three sets, the Lady Broncos came away with the victory as the score glowed on the board 21-25 for the final home game of the season.
As Bishop scored the winning point spectators flooded onto the court showering the Broncos with flowers and affection. Coach Linda Frigerio glowed with pride as her team won the co-championship title of the High Desert League. It was an exhilarating conclusion to an equally exciting season.
Next: the playoffs.
