1931-2013

Don passed away at St. Mary’s Hospital in Reno after a short illness of pneumonia on Oct. 29, 2013. Don was born in Lone Pine on Jan. 6, 1931 to Lenn “Pat” and Reta Coons. The family moved to Bishop in 1935. While in high school, Don was a member of the Junior Olympic Ski Team. He worked for Dave McCoy at McGee Creek, setting up the rope tow and T-bar lifts during skiing seasons. He graduated from Bishop Union High School in 1949. He married Alice Cornelius in 1951 and enlisted in the United States Navy. He served in the Korean Conflict, stationed in Japan. Upon discharge, in 1955, he returned to Bishop and worked for Rollins Electric as an electrician. In 1959, he established Don’s Heating and Cooling business on North Main Street. He was in that location until 1978, when he moved to Sparks, Nev. He met Helen Cryer in 1982 and they were married in 1986.
Don enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, hiking and camping. His family and friends have many fond memories of enjoying the outdoors with Don. His favorite place to fish and hike was Ruby Lake in the Eastern Sierra.
Don is survived by his wife, Helen; eight children and three stepsons, Linda Curtis of Sparks, Deborah Galle and husband, Louis of Bay City, Minn., Suzi Coons of Sparks, Darlene Whiteside and husband, Rick of Bishop, Vance Coons and wife, Donna of San Diego, Angela Nachreiner and husband, Dale of French Lick, Ind. Barbara Raugust of Anna, Ill., Kathleen Coons of Sparks; stepsons, David Cryer and wife, Tina of Sparks, Daniel Cryer, and John Cryer and wife, Penny of Mississippi; 31 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; nephew, Lenn Coons and wife, Barbara; and niece, June Coons-Bryan and husband, Harry, of Benton.
Don is preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Dale Coons “Buzz”; his sister, Gale Coons; stepson, Michael Cryer; and grandson, Daniel Nash.
A celebration of life was held Monday at Walton’s Funeral Home in Sparks, Nev. on Sullivan Lane. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Pioneer Cemetery in Bishop. The VFW Color Guard and 21-gun salute will present.
