If locals look closely at 2014 Miss California USA pageant contestants this coming January, they are likely to see Miss City of Bishop Kristina Blum among them.
After her 2012-13 reign as Miss Bishop, Blum said she’s ready to pass the crown to her successor – tonight at the Miss Bishop pageants, at 6 p.m. at the Bishop Union High School auditorium – and she has set her sights on representing the Eastern Sierra as Miss California.
Blum said she decided to run after long hours of contemplation, prayer and conversations with loved ones. “It was a difficult decision. This is light years away from my comfort zone, but like John Wayne encouraged, ‘I’m saddlin’ up anyway.’”
Through her Miss California efforts, Blum hopes to encourage “our youth, especially our girls, to know that they are beautiful for who they are,” regardless of cultural or peer expectations. “It is not always easy, but it is truly beautiful.”
In the 2014 Miss California pageant, to be held Jan. 2-4 in Long Beach, Blum’s platform will be “True beauty lies in our uniqueness as individuals (and that) a disability or a disadvantage should never disable your dreams.”
