The Lone Pine Golden Eagles Volleyball beat the Vasquez Mustangs for the second time this season and did it the hard way on the road.
The Mustangs were ranked ninth in their CIF division, but fell 3-0 to the Eagles in Lone Pine earlier this month, setting up a real battle in Acton Thursday afternoon. Time for a little Vasquez payback.
âWe knew we would have a fight on our hands after our three-game sweep,â said coach Mel Joseph.
Regardless of the Mustangsâ mind set, the Eagles took the first two games, 25-21, 25-15 and looked to be on their way to another sweep. But, Vasquez came back strong.
Game three was a battle with neither team allowing more than a 1- or 2-point cushion. With the score tied 23-23, the Mustangs squeaked out the 24-26 win.
âVasquez kept its composure and momentum in game four,â Joseph said. The Mustangs pulled out to the 22-25 win and forced the match into the fifth, tie-breaking game.
âI told the girls before the match that volleyball is 95 percent mental,â said Joseph. âWe needed to bring enough energy and everyone had to do their jobs.â Thatâs what the Eagles did in the tie-breaker, winning 15-13.
âThe Lady Eagles put together another stellar team serving performance, going 109 of 111 with 12 aces,â said Joseph.
With their third straight Desert Mountain League win, Lone Pine keeps its postseason hopes alive as the Eagles now sit in fourth place in the very competitive eight-school league.
The frontrunners in league are Desert Christian, Mammoth and Desert
The Eagles have this week off; they travel to Boron Tuesday, Nov. 4 to take on the seventh-ranked Bobcats.
Lone Pineâs final DML game is Wednesday, Nov. 6 at home against the Mammoth Huskies, currently tied for first place in league with Desert Christian.
A testament to the toughness of the DML: The top three ranked teams in league are rated second through fourth in the CIF Southern Sectionâs Division 5 rankings.
