Flora McBride Murphy, 88, was born Sept. 23, 1925 in Mono Lake to Joe McBride, Sr. and Ida Tom-McBride. She is the granddaughter of Bridgeport Tom and Leanna Tom, and great-great-granddaughter of Captain Sam. Flora passed away Oct. 15, 2013 in Yerington, Nev.
As a child she attended school in Coleville, and later in her teen years she attended Stewart Indian School. She had technical training at Chemawa Indian School in Oregon as a welder, welding ships during World War II.
Flora was employed with the Toiyabe Indian Health Project for five years as janitor prior to her retirement in 1992.
Flora married Foster Murphy in June of 1947 and they were married for 55 years. They made their home in Babbitt, Nev. after World War II, where he was employed, and later relocated to Smith Valley, Nev. In 1978, the family moved to Camp Antelope, Coleville. They lived there for 30 years until her house was destroyed by fire. She then moved with her beloved daughter Donna Murphy to Schurz, Nev. for three years while her house was being rebuilt.
Flora was one of the oldest members of the KuTzaVii-TuKaDu, Mono Lake Paiute members. She and other elders were recognized annually at the gathering of the community in Lee Vining.
She enjoyed the outdoors, gathering wood, picking pinenuts, cooking and spending time with her family and her grandchildren and great-children. Her favorite hobby was making quilts and gardening.
Flora is survived by her children: daughters, Viola Murphy and Donna Omaohoya both of Schurz, Nev.; son, David Murphy, of Schurz; Her six grandchildren, Steven Murphy, Charles Murphy, Alfina Pargas Guerrero, William Rambeau, Twyla Murphy and Tashina Murphy Lent; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
A Cry Dance is scheduled for 9 a.m. Friday, Oct. 25 at Tomâ€™s Ranch in Coleville. Funeral services will follow at noon at the Walker Community Building, in Walker. Interment will be at the Antelope Valley Cemetery in Coleville. Arrangements are entrusted to Oâ€™Brien-Rogers & Crosby Funeral Home in Reno.
