Warriors stay focused in 3-1 win over Beatty
The Big Pine Lady Warriors are on a roll. The team roared through the Beatty Lady Hornets for a 3-1 win Tuesday on home court, no small task considering the sheer toughness of the whole Beatty athletic program.
The Warriors were tenacious and strong, showing only brief glimpses of the brain fade that plagues all young teams.
Big Pine took the early lead in the first set, going ahead 8-4 with Sienna Gutierrez on the service line. The Hornets crept back but couldnât make up for lost points. Both teams traded points and side outs until Gena Lewis was up to serve with the score 13-10. Lewis started with an ace and kept going giving Big Pine a healthy 17-10 lead.
The next Warrior points run came with Gutierrez at the line. Her net skimming rockets threw the Hornets off balance and gave Big Pine a 10-point advantage at 24-14.
The Hornets were too deep in the hole to even hope for the win, but they managed another 3 points before a bad serve gave Big Pine the 25-17 win.
Game two was closer with a revitalized Beatty team taking a 0-4 lead. Anah-Kee Masonâs valiant dig gave Big Pine itâs first point and the Warriors went to work to even up the score at 4-5. Again, neither team could gain an advantage with the serve going back and forth, back and forth until the Warriors and Hornets were locked in a 13-13 tie.
First Big Pine jumped out to a slim 16-14 lead, then extended it to 19-15. The Hornets crept up at 19-17 and the back and forth started up again until the scoreboard read 22-22.
Big Pine got the side out, the final two points and the 25-22 win with Kaylee Simpson at the line.
Game three looked like an instant replay of the first match with Big Pine jumping out to a 4-0 lead. Then the tide turned with Beatty rallying to a 11-11 tie and putting together a 5-point run to take a 16-11 lead. The Warriors fought back nearly matching the Hornets point for point. But the gap was too wide and the Hornets won game three 25-19.
Now weâre down to game four, a match that in the early rounds looked far too close for Big Pine comfort. The Warriors had a 5-point run with Gutierrez at the line for a 8-3 lead, but the Hornets went on a run of their own, coming within a point at 11-10.
As close as the Warriors were to a match win, they werenât about to let this one slip through their fingers. In the final rounds of game four, Big Pine outscored Beatty 13-5 to clinch the game, 24-15 and the match 3-1.
Big Pine heads to Immanual Christian on Friday to take on the Crusaders; the Crusaders come to Big Pine Tuesday, Oct. 29, then the Trona Tornadoes on Saturday, Nov. 2.
