“We went into the Cal City Tournament with high expectations of being competitive,” Bishop Lady Broncos’ varsity volleyball coach Linda Frigerio said.
Not only was this expectation met, but also exceeded, when the Broncos went undefeated both for the Friday pool games and the tournament itself on Saturday.
The Broncos went into Saturday’s championship bracket against the Mammoth Huskies for the second time of the season and took away their second victory, winning two sets, 25-15 and 25-23. The Lady Broncos went into the championship game against Taft, almost able to taste victory, and triumphed once again in another two sets of 25-17 and 25-20.
Of their overall performance, Frigerio noted that the team played a particularly strong defensive game. “I’m glad to see them begin to realize their potential,” she said. “Individually, each player also contributed to the team’s ultimate win.”
Coach Frigerio was continually impressed with the team’s performance over the weekend, noting that, “the girls were playing together every match to win, rather than playing just to not lose.” And this team effort paid off when the Lady Broncos were handed the gleaming first-place trophy and told, “It’s nice when the best team actually wins the tournament.”
The Junior Varsity squad, one of only two JV teams in the tourney, also fared quite well. The team played against Frazier Mountain’s JV, winning in two sets, 25-14 and 25-16.
